Is this about to die?

I have a few armeria maritma. Bought as plug plants in 2020. Grown and flowered well for the last 2 years.

This year not much is happening with 2 of them (may be early.. but another one I have in a different border is shooting up decent stems now)

lots of greenery But I checked underneath and there seems to be an issue with the roots or is this normal?

And if it is normal. . can I divide it to propagate it?

I would def divide them. I can't see the roots clearly enough to comment on them, but the greenery looks very healthy -- which suggests the roots are ok?. I think they would love being divided and given a bit of space.

I have three plants and they look like that. Mine also have flower buds coming up so I think yours are probably fine.

They look pretty scruff in the wild too.

I've not done that before...
Do you put into a pot for a while or plant straight put?
