Hi, may I please have your help in identifying this plant? We recently moved house and this one came up about a month ago and vigorously growing.
also I have brought some vinca minor from the garden centre and saw some advice that it is invasive. I have some shady slopes that I would like some evergreen ground cover on. Please help

I don't know what the plant is but I think vinca major is the vinca to worry about - I've never had any problems with vinca minor.

Daffodilsandbeer · 26/03/2023 12:11

That looks like day Lilly to me.

for the vinca major I’d not plant that, vinca minor is better, they are periwinkles by the way.

Gilmoregirly · 26/03/2023 12:18

thank you @Daffodilsandbeer @WobblyLondoner . I bought the vinca minor with variegated leaves. I will plant them tomorrow. I am worried about they invading the grass turf

I think you'll be fine - if they do get into the lawn they are very easy to remove.

Seconding Day Lily. If you download Leaf Snap it is very good at identifying plants just by their leaves. It is right 9 times out of 10.

Daftasabroom · 26/03/2023 12:27

That looks like day lilly. I'd dig out and get rid of vinca, it's complete pain, it's smothers everything and is really difficult to get rid of.

Gilmoregirly · 26/03/2023 12:57

Thank you. @Daftasabroom i will be planting vinca minor, i.e lesser periwinkle and it looks like it is less invasive

@Gilmoregirly this is our wildflower bank, dominated by Vinca that I've been pulling up for years.

@Daftasabroom omg, thank you so much for posting the photo. Do you know of it is vinca major or minor?

I suspect it's vinca major, it was here when we moved in 15+ years ago. It's spread into the lawn and 15m along the bank, the only thing that can compete with it is nettle. The roots run deep and are really brittle so pulling it out can make things worse not better.

Gilmoregirly · 26/03/2023 13:36

Thanks @Daftasabroom hopefully vinca minor would not be that much invasive

Thank you@AlisonDonut , it indeed matched to day lily.

@Gilmoregirly Do you have any cats? If so, please get rid of the day lily, they are highly toxic to cats. If the pollen gets on their fur, they ingest it when they groom themselves, and it can be fatal. That applies to all lilies by the way, including the ones that florists gaily include in bouquets.

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/03/2023 20:55

Agree it looks like day lily.

Gilmoregirly · 26/03/2023 20:56

@neitherofthem I don’t have cats but thanks for letting me know. Fortunately we don’t get any cats visiting too.

Don't do it! Between the vinca and ground elder that my neighbour has in his garden, patrolling my perimeters is a full time job in the summer!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 29/03/2023 21:13

Thanks for the day lily post OP and the ID. I have the same in newish garden and have been wondering what it is as I didn't plant it.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 29/03/2023 21:15

Also my gardener advised against vinca major for all the reasons pp have stated.

Yknow you can eat ground elder same as salad leaves like spinach.... Random info for you. My garden was also covered, laced it with weed killer and put bark on it. Now I get random sprouts that I can deal with.

Op it's rare to get vinca major these days, I'd been searching to try get rid of ground elder. Minor will be fine, I'm sowing thyme in a bid to suppress weeds as my garden is huge.
