Raised veggie bed

I usually grown my vegetables in pots, but this weekend I’m preparing my new raised veggie bed. Can anyone please recommend what is best under the compost?
it will be on grass (clay based under the turf). I was wondering about a weed membrane, or just a layer of cardboard.
Suggestions appreciated! Thanks.

I'd say cardboard, weed membrane generally has plastic in it and then you'll eventually have a bed full of little bits of plasticy stuff when it breaks down.

I'd say cardboard too. And, imo, it's well worth taking the time to remove even the slightest trace of labels, tape etc. To pp's point, you don't want tiny bits of plastic hanging about.

How deep is the bed? You may not need a membrane if there’s sufficient depth of soil on top

Definitely cardboard.

Cardboard, then compost on top of that.
