Trees near fence

I want to plant some apple trees in a bed that runs alongside a fence. My SIL thinks that this is a bad idea but I don't really have anywhere else to put them.
Would you advise against?

Dwarf varieties will be fine

You can espalier them, ie train them so they have horizontal branches running along the fence. Well done, it looks very attractive.
