I had parsley in pots last year. It looks dead now, will it come back or do I need to start again this year?

Was it flat leaf or curly parsley?

greenacrylicpaint · 24/02/2023 10:11

it should come back.
I cut mine off after christmas down to the ground and now it shows the first green tips

greenacrylicpaint · 24/02/2023 10:12

it has to be curley parsley <gavel> much finer taste imo.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/02/2023 10:16

It may come back, it’s biennial, flowers second year from sowing. Once it starts producing flower stems it puts all its energy into that rather than into leaves. For this reason, most people sow every year.

BarrelOfOtters · 24/02/2023 10:20

I'd resow, if it does come back it's likely to get a bit tough quite quickly as it will be trying to seed.

Dodecaheidyin · 24/02/2023 11:30

Fear not, it's curly parsley 😁

Thank you for your answers, I'll sow some more.

I found the overwintered parsley very bitter and rather tough, which was disappointing.

Oldnproud · 24/02/2023 17:11

I've given up growing parsley from seed. Much quicker and easier just to buy a living plant from the supermarket and split it into several chunks that I then plant out. I don't do it until about April though.

Dodecaheidyin · 24/02/2023 17:40

I'll try that as well, thank you @Oldnproud

One piece of advice if you do - try to find a plant that hasn't got too leggy.

If you are sowing parsley do it on Good Friday. Parsley is notorious for difficult/delayed germination. Apparently it has to go to the devil and back 7 times before germinating, but if you sow on Good Friday that journey to hell and back is not required. Old wives tale, I know. But I'm an old wife!

Dodecaheidyin · 24/02/2023 18:04

That's interesting, @Theoldwrinkley , I'll certainly try that.

Thank you, @Oldnproud , that makes sense.

My Granny used to say that witches were good at growing Parsley, mine’s overwintered well.
Just off to polish the broomstick.
