Tesco fruit trees now in store

Passed one store today and saw fruit trees on offer - 2 for £12. Looks a good deal.

Has anyone had good luck with Tesco's fruit trees?

We had some from Asda and Gardening Express and they were terrible, so I'm following with interest. Our trees from Mail Order Trees have been fabulous.

I’ve bought two, pear and plum. They’re planted in an area of garden that I’ve ‘reclaimed’ from overgrown bushes, brambles and weeds. I’m not really concerned about them fruiting, although a bonus. I just wanted to replace a mixed variety of trees, as I’d had to fell a couple of old dangerous ones.
Hopefully they’ll grow and perhaps provide some fruit for the wildlife - maybe me!

I saw what I thought was a Forsythia in Tesco and wanted to buy one but it was a yellow flowered Jasmin (and I have jasmine already)

I did buy a fig tree in Aldi a few years ago got it through to its 3rd year but sadly it withered and died off.

Trees should be planted during their dormant period, usually November through to January if at all possible. Once they start creating new growth they really don’t like being moved. Potted trees can be planted all year but not ideal

Bit cold for digging most days here.

I bought a cherry tree from Tesco at this time of year (valentines present!) about 10 years ago. When I got home I realised it said it was a dwarf variety and would only get to 1.2m, which was annoying.

It didn't grow much in the next few years, but then took off and is now a full height cherry tree with delicious juicy cherries in early summer (when I can beat the birds to it - one day the cherries are green and the birds are standing by, the next day they're dark red and the birds are stripping the tree!).

It's a great tree! Definitely worth a punt at 2 for £12!

can I ask how you found out they were dwarf trees? I’ve just planted two but there is so little info on the label. I wondered who the original supplier was as I want to know the size they will grow to and how old they are

If anyone knows the age of the trees and size ( root stock ) or even the original nursery who supplies Tesco that would be very useful.

I’ve just planted two Stella Cherry 🍒 and they need pruning differently in the first few years depending on size and age.

The label on mine said it would grow to approx 1.2m

It is now about 3.5m, 10 years ish later.

I bought two of the Tesco cherry trees yesterday. Going to plant them today.

Label says to soak for an hour before planting. They have a 12 month guarantee so I'm keeping the receipt.

@Nikunja109 I put it in the ground. Just dug a hole and put it in!

Do you mean too cold to grow cherries in this country or too cold to plant trees? Trees are better planted in the dormant season, as long as the soil isn’t frosted.

First week of February is often a bit frosty, no?

I had a Stella cherry that I thought was a patio cherry, that's why I bought it. I planted it in the garden by the patio when it got too big for the pot and it just kept growing.

I eventually had to get it taken down as not only was getting far too big where it was, it was dropping so much sap and was plastered in blackfly. The path was shiny with the sap on it.

The birds liked it though and ate all the cherries I couldn't reach, which was a lot. 😁

Which mail order did you use ?

An independent garden centre is better, some offer a guarantee.
