Artificial grass

Hi, I am currently doing my garden and we decided to lay artificial grass. We are looking after 40mm depth grass but I don't know where to look to buy. The grass has so many names. Please someone suggest a place and good turf. Thank you!

We used a local company who fitted and did the lot for us. I think we have 46mm grass. If you are in Dorset I can recommend them.

Look around for a recommended local supplier and fitter.

Please don't. It's really selfish. Bad for the environment and contributes to flooding.

Northernlurker · 04/02/2023 13:25

Don't do this. It looks awful, it's bad for wildlife diversity and flooding and it should be illegal except in carefully controlled circumstances.

Singleandproud · 04/02/2023 13:29

Have you really done your research into choosing artificial grass?
It is a safety hazard in the summer as it gets incredibly hot in the sun, pets can't walk on it nor people in bare feet. So avoid if that part of your garden is not in the shade or if you have pets or children as it can cause burns.
Environmentally it is awful for lots of reasons and can cause issues with flooding in bad weather.

If you want something low maintenance look at just sowing thyme or clover, both good for pollinators and neither need mowing as only grow to a certain height, just a tidy up in Spring and at the end of Autumn

Northernlurker · 04/02/2023 13:31

If you're on Twitter have a look at shit lawns. Really highlights habitat loss. Also shows plenty that look dreadful.

sorcerersapprentice · 04/02/2023 13:39

Please don't as it's just so bad for environment. It'll likely have an adverse impact on the house value. And it just looks awful

123rd · 04/02/2023 13:41

Just echoing PP. Please don't. It's so hot in the summer it's unbearable to walk in sometimes
And -imo- looks ruddy awful

Keepyourmummysboys · 04/02/2023 13:43

I’d also add my voice. Don’t do it. It’s one of the most contentious things. It’s shit for the environment, incredibly tacky, never looks real up close, and can really put folks off buying if you ever try to sell.

it went through a period of popularity but the tide has turned now due to environmental impacts of having a plastic lawn.

goldennotyetoldie · 04/02/2023 13:56

Imagine you are a worm. Wiggling along, working your magic. You pop up because you fancy a bit if sunlight. And bonk! You hit your head on an impenetrable later of plastic. And it's hot and it burns you. And then you die.

And then the ground becomes sterile. And then nothing grows. And there is less oxygen. And nowhere for the tiny insects to live. And no clover for the bees so they starve. And then no one can pollinate the plants. So there are shortages of tomatoes.

This is the reality of plastic grass and acres of paving.

Please don't do it. Even gravel on a membrane would be better.

ArseMenagerie · 04/02/2023 13:58

Echoing above posters.
damaging for the environment
can’t be recycled
hard to clean
a germ palace esp if you have pets
it looks pure shite

Phineyj · 04/02/2023 14:00

Are you aware you have to hoover and wash it? My neighbour has driven me mad with the hoovering!

You don't have to hoover it. A rake and a brush work fine on it. You also don't have to wash it! The rain does that! Admittedly we don't have a dog using it, so maybe you do need to with a dog, but to say you have to wash and hoover it is bonkers.

AlexandraPeppernose · 01/05/2023 22:25

Whilst I agree it's shite environmentally I inherited some with my house and mine doesn't get smelly or hot, sweeps up lovely and if you lift the corner up, houses the most intrinsic ant colony I've ever seen. So whilst not ideal, don't believe everything you read.

Don't do it.
Really shit fir the environment.

KingSpaniel · 01/05/2023 22:33

Please don’t. There are plans afoot to ban it as it’s such a bad idea. Thank you 😊

EversoDisorganised · 01/05/2023 22:38

Another saying please don't, they are disastrous for the environment. I walked past one yesterday and the owner was vacuuming it with a Henry hoover, must have taken far longer than cutting a regular lawn of the same size.

moggerhanger · 01/05/2023 22:39

Plastic grass is not gardening.

gogohmm · 01/05/2023 22:41

Just don't! We have spent 2 years ripping up the sections the previous owners put in, it had no plants, insects or birds visiting, now we have nesting birds, insects, 2 trees and 2 climbing plants (small garden) and foxes visiting now

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 01/05/2023 22:41

Eugh artificial lawns are just hideous both environmentally and aesthetically. Not sure why you posted in the gardening section, isn’t there a home decor board as it’s essentially carpeting outside 😒

rainbowunicorn · 02/05/2023 20:55

Don't, please. It is awful stuff.

SutWytTi · 30/11/2023 06:27

It should be banned.

I've reported the plastic death carpet company for advertising.
