Hoping you eill be able to help me identify the rose tree without any pics!

It was a deep red but not purple.
It had a glorious and beautiful old-fashioned proper rose scent (NOT tudor rose which makes me ill)
It was a tree, about 4ft tall when I was given it and flowered in its first season in my garden, no sulking!

It was really important to me as it was given to me by my favourite aunt on the occasion of my mum's funeral - there was a knockon the door early on the day of mum's funeral and there was my aunt with the tree obvs straight from a nursery somewhere between XDevon and Suffolk, mostlikely over in Suffolk; " I'm not staying and will see you there but QMI want you to have this now, put it in the garden as it is, bagged up and plant it this week" and she was off.

It did well. It was lovely. And then one year I couldn't find it. None of use believed it was gone, how could it have? That bit of the garden was full of roses of various sorts, all been there a long time, much longer than mine, and I had planted garlic and parsley and it was all getting a bit overgrown as MI had deteriorated quite a lot of that last year (ms).

DD eventually got some really nice helpful gardeners io dig around that d and sort it all out. They confirmed there was no sign, NO SIGN, of my rose.

I don't know what rose it was, I cn't remember.my aunt is gone, my cousin's know nothing about it.

I really badly want to replace it.

Van any of you help me?

Sorry it got lost.

Can't think what it might have been, your best bet would be to have a nose around some websites, David Austin, Peter Beales, and so on, but also have a look at some French gardening shops online, they have some lovely old roses and it might help you find it.

IcakethereforeIam · 06/01/2023 19:36

Was it stolen?

PritiPatelsMaker · 06/01/2023 21:16

Could it be any of these?

Jux · 07/01/2023 00:47

Thank you. Any other rose specialists you know of?

It was a bit like 'Thinking of you' in that link of your PritiPatelsMaker, but I think rather darker. I would have to go somewhere to smell them too!

I shall look at Peter Beale's and David Austin tomorrow, though I think I've already looked at the latter and been a bit overwhelmed.

IcaketherforeIam, I have no idea. One year it was there and blooming, and the next year it wasn't. The gardening guys said they had a good dig around adn found no sign of even roots. Do people climb over a wall and dig up a rose in the middle of a rose bed, to steal one? Would someone actually do that?

My DSis Gardener is a sod for "donating " plants that he's had from someone else's garden.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/01/2023 07:59

It's a bit odd. I've never had a rose just up and disappear.

IcakethereforeIam · 07/01/2023 11:47

Some people will steal anything. Standard roses are quite expensive too. There's a company called Fryer's roses might be worth a look. They have some nice varieties and I think they do mail order.

ICaker, thanks I'll have a look at Fryer's too.

TamarindTree, that's lovely. A bit too pink but that may just be tech differences or something.

I'm going to have to persuade dh to take me to some rose places, aren't I? He'll hate it and put it off forever! He's put off Eden Project outing for over 4 years even though he enjoyed the one we went on 10 years ago! He doesn't believe he wasn't bored to tears..... Grin

I thought of Munstead Wood too, but it's been discontinued. Shame, as it's a lovely rose with a lovely scent.

Can't you go with a friend instead? Sounds like it would be much more fun!

Jux · 10/01/2023 17:24

TamarindTree, that is lovely, very much the right sort of colour, but it looks like it's a double? Mine wasn't.

Just as well really, if it's been dicontinued!

And yes, PritiPatelsMaker, it would be more fun with someone else, but everyone's so busy these days, between work and children.....
