Is this gatecrasher a crocosmia?

Just looked out the window and noticed a new plant about to flower in the border. It definitely wasn't planted by us!

We're in the south and it's been mild, the salvia and roses look better now than they did in July/august. I've not seen this one before at all though, and it's in the most prominent position so I'd have noticed.

Any ideas on what it could be or how it got there?

Thanks!

Looks like a gladioli to me

NanTheWiser · 31/10/2022 14:07

Gladiolus from me, too.

Jericha · 31/10/2022 15:04

Thanks both. It looks nothing like the ones I planted last year or this year which all flowered in July. It looks more like grass. Maybe the mild weather has done something funny to them?

My guess is Gladiolus byzantinus, which is a species from the Mediterranean, not one of the larger flowered hybrids. I have it in my garden, and it has popped up in a few places, so wonder if it set seed.

Thank you all!

Could it be a kaffir lily - I saw some in flower recently.

Could definitely be a kaffir lily. They bloom at this time of year. Are those the leaves in the background? They look right.

NanTheWiser · 01/11/2022 14:01

Ooh yes! Could be Schizostylis coccinea! Right time of the year for flowers.

Jericha · 01/11/2022 20:33

Ooh yes I think it is that, thank you. It's quite pretty, but so random how it's appeared!
