What is the tall-ish perennial in the middle of the shot here, against the fence (not the jasmine growing on the fence). There's another at the left of the shot too.

I think its veronicastrum. This photo was taken in June maybe? Pre flowering - It could be Diana, Apollo or one of the taller varieties.

Thanks! That does look like it! Do those need deadheading, or could I treat them like rudbeckia and just cut them right down in Feb?

Hi, I leave standing to Feb and cut to ground. Divide then too if you want more. It flowers once so no point in deadheading. Very good combined with Deschampsia cespitosa 'Goldschleier' - both really sing together.

@20DigitCombination No, not penstemon, its leaves are in opposite pairs. Veronicastrum are whorled.
