I often see lovely small trees in pots framing peoples front door. Are they bay trees? Any other trees that are suitable? Thank you

They're lovely as long as you don't mind spiders. My god did they attract some bigguns.

I've never had any spiders from my bay tree

We had those minor ornamental conifer type things. Had them 6 weeks and were getting at least one spider a day. Soon as we got rid of them, we barely saw any. Massive fuck off brown things, one was nearly the size of a teacup. Had to drop an encyclopedia on it because I wasn't sure a shoe would kill it.

Same when we had pots of ivy out there. They seem to be attracted to them and just decide to pop in for a nosey.
