My plant app is showing this to be a New Zealand Christmas Tree, but this seems to be a huge tree - this bush has been in the border for several years and is not even a metre high so that doesn't feel right.

I'd like to know when / how to prune it, as it's getting quite woody and bare, and last time I tried, I thought I'd killed it and it took a long time to recover!

What is this please?

It’s a hebe. Once the large ones get straggly they don’t really take well to pruning. If it’s looking past its best, hoik it out and have a trip to the garden centre.

Possibly an Azalea?

A hebe. Not an azalea. You’ve demonstrated the advisability of using apps as a starting point, not a definitive answer Grin

Hebe and I agree ,they don't do well pruning.

Nice to know it wasn't my poor gardening skills that nearly killed it last time then 😁
