When is the best time to plant Lily of the Valley? And is it better to plant corms or plants. Thank you.

I’ve always planted the plants in the green, but if your planting corms I’d do it in October along with the spring bulbs.

I’ve done both autumn and in the green planting and they both worked fine

I think lily of the valley is best 'planted in the green', but if all you've got are corms then give 'em a go anyway. I think they're best planted in late summer autumn, like crocuses. That said, if you're planting or splitting the actual plants, I honestly can't think what the best time is to do that.

It spreads like wildfire. One way of containing it is to push slates into thé soil which stops it spreading.

Thank you for your replies. Can I just check does 'planting in the green' mean planting plants after the blooms have gone? So next May ish ?

It spreads like wildfire.

Except when you want it to.

Me too.

I soaked the corms but otherwise planting up worked the same and performed about the same too.

Anytime after it has sprouted leaves - pre, mid or post flowering.

Does lily of the valley have corms? I thought it had fleshy roots, ie rhizomes. But I don’t know because I’ve never planted it, I’ve only ever inherited it

Yes, I have one that comes up every year but never any more. Tried planting more corms and none of them came up.
