Please can anyone identify this plant? No one I'm with knows what it is!

Echium pininana I think. Only hardy in the South West or South coast usually.

I think I remember seeing it growing at Ventnor Botanic Garden on the Isle of Wight some years ago. They have a very sheltered microclimate there, and they can grow all sorts of sub-tropical stuff.

There are some in the city centre in Sheffield so they will cope further north if they are in a sheltered position.
