Growing jerusalem artichokes

Hi everyone

I've been given 6 or 7 Jerusalem artichoke plants by a friend, which I was going to put in the far end of my veg patch - it's about 10 ft wide, and I can spare about 3ft for them as they grow. I know they grow tall, which is fine (they won't block the sun from the rest of the patch) - but I'm panicking about them taking over the whole veg patch in time!

Have any of you grown them? Will I regret this?!

Many thanks

they Are massive but you can harvest them, all then cut back. I grow them as ornamentals at the back of a herbaceous border bec as use I love the flowers.

Oops just noticed the number you have, plant 2 pass on the others.

You’ll always miss a few when harvesting, so they will come up next year. If any are out of place, it’s easy to pull them up - they’re sunflowers, not ground elder Grin

Thanks so much for getting back to me - yes you’re right - they’re not ground elder! I was having images of my veg patch being taken over!!

When I said plants, I’m wondering if that’s overstating it….. this is what I’ve got - photo - (more stalks than plants!). I was going to plant the whole lot….

I'm growing them for the first time. I think they need a decent amount of space about a foot apart. They're doing well from what I can see (they're about as tall as me.
I also have ground elder, that's doing very well too unfortunately!

Yes, I would plant as many as I had space for. They’re a bit behind. They’ll produce tubers but maybe not large ones. Then any that get left in the ground will get off to a prompt start next year.

Fab, thank you very much. They're in the ground! 😊
