What has happened to my poor clematis?

I planted this lovely Clematis in a container in early spring, and whilst one half is flowering well the other half looks completely dead. It's a variety called 'Chelsea' and is pruning group 3. The half that is still flowering is going gang busters but the other half seems very sad indeed- I've never had half a plant die on me before! I've been giving it a good water 2-3 times a week, and have been watering pretty much daily during the hot weather. It was planted with lots of well rotted manure and has been fed recently as I've read they can be quite hungry plants. The planter is up on feet as I also read they like decent drainage. Any advice most appreciated! TIA!

I reckon there's a broken branch or stem in there somewhere. See if you can cut back the dead stuff, bit by bit until you reach healthy growth.

Could it be clematis wilt?

@Newforumnewname eek! After looking this up on the RHS website I think you could be right.
