Help! Do i have a mutant sunflower?

Hi, I am VERY new to planting seeds as you will be able to tell from my query. I have recently planted sunflower seeds (about 10 days ago). There is no visible sign of any sprouts coming out of the top yet 🤔but this is growing out of the drainage hole. Is this a root or the sunflower beginning to grow upside down. Do I need to do anything to fix this? Picture attached, thank you.

How far down did you plant the seed in the pot/soil?

Yarnasaurus · 09/06/2022 16:21

It's a root, you should see the leafy parts soon 🌱

Blackmagicqueen · 09/06/2022 16:23

@TooMuchBoozeTooManyBoos roughly in the middle.

I reckon you planted it too deep. I'd gently fish it out and replant it at a more shallow depth, with the root pointing down and the bit that will be leafy just below the soil line.

@Yarnasaurus yay! I need this to work for my 5 year old as I've managed to kill all of our other 'projects!' Can I just leave it as is? I won't need to repot or anything?

Thank you @Greensleeves I'm so scared to damage it but i can have a go.

I wouldn't dig it out, sunflowers are super robust and it will sort itself out.

Blackmagicqueen · 09/06/2022 16:36

@Yarnasaurus thank you, that's great to hear as I'd probably end up damaging it! I was worried it would begin to rot but I'll leave it and hopefully the leafy part will find its way!

Just spotted this little shoot coming out of the top; hopefully a good sign it's making its way! The twin hasn't been quite so lucky with no sprouts spotted.

Excellent 🌻

The soil looks sopping wet, maybe don't give it quite so much water.

Trethew · 09/06/2022 22:13

Let it dry out or it will rot and die

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/06/2022 08:02

Moist is what is needed, not wet. If it were mine I’d repot immediately into dryer soil, but you have to be very delicate. In your case, stop watering and hope it dries out quickly.

Thanks for the advice everyone, very much appreciated. I'll try not to overwater and remember that less really is more! Woke up this morning and it has sprouted and is doing well. 😃Soil is drying out luckily with it being in a warm sunny spot. Think I've killed/drowned the other one though 😧
