I noticed a collection of bright red bugs who were savaging my Lilly’s to bits!! Anyone know what they are and how to get rid of them? They were not on any of my other plants only the Lilly’s

Lily beetles. Pick them off and crush them. Then hope for the best.

wishmyhousetidy · 02/06/2022 21:51

They will devour your lilies very quickly if you don’t squash them

PinkBump2022 · 02/06/2022 21:52

Will they bite me if I pick them off?

Kill them. They are relentless and will ruin your lillies. Also, look under the leaves for eggs, or the immature grubs and remove those too.

Lily Beetles! Get them before they destroy the entire Lily! I've given up growing Lillies now as my garden gets loads of them!

Berthatydfil · 02/06/2022 22:14

They drop off the leaves and turn upside down if disturbed so get a cup of water with a squirt of washing up liquid in it. Hold under the leaf and knock beetle off into it and drown them.
Next get some kitchen towel and wipe the underneath of the leaves. The grubs cover themselves in their poop so all you will see is black slime so if you need to wipe them off and squish them.

Dimenw · 02/06/2022 22:15

I've also given up on lilies because of them.

newnamethanks · 02/06/2022 22:16

They are absolutely swines to get rid of. I gave up the lilies.

PinkBump2022 · 02/06/2022 23:18

Thanks everyone I shall get down to business tomorrow and hopefully get rid of them all as my Lilly’s are looking beautiful and I don’t want them destroyed

Since this is a thread about lilies, I hope you don't mind me mentioning that lily pollen is highly poisonous to cats, and can be fatal.

So few people know about this, it really should be publicised far more.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/06/2022 00:16

Even worse, I often find the fucking things in pairs.AngryAngry the slimy deposit and/or grubs are truly disgusting. Just about everything else in the garden I can go with live and let live, but these are just so blatant.

(NB. That's a description above, I rarely swear on MN)

EBearhug · 03/06/2022 01:30

The RHS is running a survey, so you can report them.

I had a lot of Asian lilies wiped out by reddish bugs, they looked kind of like orange ladybugs.

BirdWatch · 03/06/2022 03:17

I only have day lilies now, except for 1 or 2 Asian lilies that survived my Lilly full.

We planted Pink Defender lilies this year and, despite finding beetles on the old lily stalks, all the Defenders are growing almost entirely damage free.

It's starting to look like they are lily resistant.

No

Plant eating insects rarely have tough enough mouthparts to pierce human skin. And they don’t usually try. Lily beetles’ main defence is to fall off the plant landing upside down so their brown underparts are perfectly camouflaged against the soil. I hold a bowl underneath when I’m picking them off

Yes, I don’t grow lilies any more because of this. I don’t have a cat but neighbours do.
