Seems almost tree like? Any ideas what it could be?

What's this?

It almost looks like a rose leaf but it could be buddleia which comes up everywhere. Some wiser gardeners than me will come along soon.

Dominuse · 01/06/2022 09:25

Looks like a buddleia to me - but other things also can look like it - give it a bit more time

withsexypantsandasausagedog · 01/06/2022 09:29

It looks like a small tree. Hard to tell as I can't zoom in but perhaps a cherry? Where did you find it?

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 01/06/2022 09:31

It definitely looks rose-like. I'm guessing a self seeded rowan tree. How lovely!

Cranefliesthinkthecarroofiswater · 01/06/2022 09:34

Looks like a tree sapling, possibly ash.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/06/2022 09:42

Possibly ash. Easily recognised by the leaf buds being black in winter. The bark when young is greyish, and the leaves appear in opposite pairs, rather than alternately up the trunk - can’t quite see whether thats the case with yours.

It definitely isn’t Buddleia. The leaves are compound, ie made up of separate smaller leaflets.Buddleia has simple leaves. For the same reason it can’t be cherry.

Rose and Rowan both have compound leaves, but rose leaves are alternate, as are rowan, whose leaflets are more serrated and, even at that age, more numerous.

I was thinking ash. Is the stem grey green? Sort of sagey?

user1471530109 · 01/06/2022 10:32

OP I've just removed two almost identical plants. They were identified correctly by the wonderful mnetters in the gardening forum as ash saplings.
I thought the second one was a thornless rose at first but looking at the stem I could see the same signs as on the first one. It's the black buds. Does your have almost black nodules on the stem/trunk?

LIZS · 01/06/2022 10:35

Looks like a self seeded ash

Ash sapling
