Mares tail

Is there actually any way to get rid of mares tail?! It pops up everywhere in the top part of our garden, through a membrane and stone/ pebble area and through any tiny crack in the concrete?

I don't mind repeatedly pulling from the borders but I have plans to make the top nice and pave it and I don't want it ruined with mares tail!

Fingers crossed it hasn't spread to the rest of the garden (yet!)

My mother in law once asked this question on a gardeners question time forum. The panel advised her to move house :) not helpful I know

I believe there is a fairly nasty, also expensive chemical solution. Can’t for the life of me think what it’s called though. Round up might work, but will work better if you do the vinegar treatment first iirc.
flamethrower? The problem is the roots go very deep & very long, also it can regenerate from a few cells, so if you drop/miss a bit, it’s still there. It’s an amazing plant actually, as old as the dinosaurs :)

Kurtail. I’ve never used it, too expensive.

I have seen this stuff recommended on here before. Haven't had the time (or spare cash) to buy it yet but would love to know how you get on if you do. We also have it all through our drive.

My sister got rid of it by pouring boiling water on it every day for about a month - you need to really soak it. Not a quick fix, and if you have a lot of it you’d need gallons of water but environmentally friendly.

her problem is her neighbour hasn’t treated theirs so …….. you need to eradicate it everywhere because it spreads like mad!

Rostate... You have to use it for several years using a scorched earth policy.

Crush the mares tail, spray and cover. Once dead scrape the top 0.5 -1m of soil off and dispose of it so you don't have spores.

Next year repeat the crush and cover.....

I found stomping on it before spraying with glyphosate did the job, although I didn’t have too much, I haven’t seen it for years now.

Keep pulling them out, easier when they are taller so you can get some root. I moved into a relative's house and I had never seen these things growing as far back as I can remember. The garden was over grown for a few years, we moved in and these things were everywhere in the summer! Mum said that they grew when the relative first moved in and she kept doggedly pulling them out. It's almost like they go into hiding if they are disturbed too much!
But I hate them. I'd gladly swap for our old garden of dandelions!

Whilst not considered as invasive as knotweed in terms of legal obligations etc to remove and treat it is invasive and will cause long term damage. Just pulling it out wont work and will just spread it. It does need to be treated by a specialist but the cost is significantly lower than that of knotweed. There is usually a 5 year plan to treat it
