Help identifying plants please

Hello,

Just bought our first home and the garden has some plants already thriving. Can anyone help identify what they are and whether they'll flower and what needs cutting away. My plant knowledge is basically zero. Thank you :)

No it won’t. It will tell you which picture most resembles yours. Plant app “answers” should only be used as a starting point. Plant apps have improved hugely, but they can get it spectacularly wrong.

The photos aren't clear enough. Get closer so we can see the shape of the leaves.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/05/2022 09:09

The spiky leaves look like something in the Iris family - ie they look as if they’re growing in two ranks one each side of the stem, rather than all around the stem - but the buds don’t, I think, look right for Iris, so maybe Sisyrhynchium? Or maybe I’m completely wrong.

The other photo’s don’t give us enough detail to identify. A stem of each and a close-up of the leaf would be helpful.

As a rule of thumb, do major pruning just after the plant has flowered (unless you’re growing it for the berries). So leave everything for the time being. Identification will be easier once you have flowers, and then you can prune if you wish (pruning isn’t critical to the health of the plant, we do it to keep plants smaller and maintain a shape we find aesthetically pleasing)

I think Mere is right about the sisyrinchium. We have it in the garden and it’s sisyrichium striatum. It tends to pop up all over the place but I just hoik it out if it gets a bit much. Found this pic online which looks very like yours, I think, OP?

The plantnet app is good (and free)

Winterfellismyhome · 18/05/2022 15:48

I think that one is correct @Halsall

The cream flower you are holding and the red one are roses. The last pic is a Photonia (Red Robin). 🌹

speak2me · 18/05/2022 17:38

Argh spell check! That last one should say Photinia!

Winterfellismyhome · 19/05/2022 07:32

Thank you @speak2me

And the yellow flowered spiky one is a Sisyrhynchium

Mischance · 19/05/2022 14:45

Sisyrhynchium - it's a thug and grows all over the place - after it has flowered the leaves all turn black.

Red Robin is fun - no flowers to speak of but the leaves are lovely - there is some rule about when best to cut back so you do not lose the red leaves next year - worth googling I think, now you know what it is.

Winterfellismyhome · 20/05/2022 13:27

Thanks both

get the 'picture this' app. It is has saved my beds from weeds. It is almost always accurate.

But when it is wrong it can be quite spectacularly wrong, so always double check against other sources
