Hi all, novice gardener here and I am stumped as to what this plant is. It’s growing everywhere and matures into this odd looking thing. It looks poisonous to me but just wondering what you guys think it is? Hopefully the photo attaches. Black circle is mature plant and red is the younger version.

Comes up as field horsetail on Google.

Looks like some form of mares tail or horse tail?

Chishnfips · 08/05/2022 19:17

Horsetail or Marestail. It's horribly invasive and not much will kill it even glyphosphate. It grows through concrete and is as old as the dinosaurs so it lived through the ice age. You have to keep digging it up and trying to remove the roots as much as possible.

Horse Tail. Absolute nightmare to get rid of.

Chishnfips · 08/05/2022 19:19

Oh and it's not actually poisonous you can make tea with it but it's not particularly appetising.

Peppermintgreentea · 08/05/2022 19:19

Oh dear! I’ve been round the garden digging up as much as possible today but it is literally growing in pots, on the grass etc. Thank you all for your help! Mumsnet to the rescue again 😊

Yup - Marestail. You have to keep digging it out.

Really deep rooted and any broken bits left in the soil will regrow.

Cutting it off at soil level every time it appears will slowly weaken it, but it will take years.

Agree- but it is possible. I've gone from hundreds to maybe 10-15 in the garden now. The river bank though.... Not so much

I am in year 3 of my war against this. Hideous plant. Good luck getting rid of it.
