My yucca is not happy

I have a yucca in my south-facing living room. It was healthy for a year; I was watering it every week or two and it was getting dry between. Over winter it dropped leaves and now looks very sad... the remaining leaves are drooping one by one. The stem is also getting looser in the soil so I think the roots are disintegrating :-(
Is there anything I can do? I was reading about chopping the top off and trying to root. There are some little nubs at the base of the remaining leaves, are those trying to be roots? (See picture)
I'm happy to admit defeat if I need to chuck it and start again!

From that picture the pot looks tiny, have you tried re-potting it?

I did re-pot it once, couldn't see to many roots round the outside when I did and there's none visible in the drainage holes now.

I watched a man on YouTube cut off the side leafy bit at the stalk and repot that, it had lovely roots after 3 months. Going to try that rather than let it slowly die.
