Anyone know what this suckering plant is?

Moved into a new house and this plant is running riot. I've cut all the long stems down but will need to allocate some time to get rid of it. Anyone tell me what it is? The one in the middle, not the plant on the right (Spanish bluebells).

Are the leaves in any way fragrant and is the stem square?

I'd say the stems are circular and not overly fragrant. Some better pics attached.

The longer stems (1m high) were woody

Do you think the long stems held flowers?

Swanhilde · 23/04/2022 08:30

Could it be a Phygelius? Mine looks like that and spreads wildly if not kept in check.

Yes but haven't seen the flowers as only been in the house since November

Google images looks like it could well be. It's outcompeted it's neighbouring shrubs and it's sending shoots to dominate the rest of the garden

My mum gave me a root of hers and it's been quite thuggish ever since! Flowers are somewhat gaudy and I'm never sure if I actually like it or not. But it is prolific and fills a gap atm.

Having read some more (after your identification) it sounds ruddy hard/impossible to get rid of. Arghhhh. What I feared but not what I hoped to find out. Operating piss off phygelius commences
