Mouldy hyacinth bulbs?

Bought my Mum two hyacinth vases and bulbs for Christmas. She said today the bulbs have gone mouldy and we don't have a clue why!

She has followed the instructions. Anyone get any idea why this would happen?

This happened to me the one time I tried to grow a hyacinth bulb in a vase rather than a pot, with proper soil around it rather than just water. Obviously it can be done in a vase, but maybe the bulbs don't like getting too wet so there may be a special technique.
