Do Passion Flowers die back in winter?

I have a fairly well established Passion Flower. This year, it is looking very manky and sorry for itself. I don’t remember whether, in previous years, it died back over - I though it was evergreen.

Googling isn’t giving me any clarity; can anyone help?

TIA

I cut mine back last winter before and it’s never been the same. I’ve since been told by a professional gardener that it’s best to leave them alone.

I did cut mine back too heavily a couple of years ago and it's really struggled since ☹️

Thanks - I haven’t cut this one back, that’s the thing.

It just seems to have died off.

I can’t remember if it does it every winter (I’m fairly sure not to this extent).

Before I nearly killed mine, it would look really straggling until the spring.

Mine looks a mess at the moment and it’s due it’s annual hack back. I chop it right back to the main structure, it looks like a bunch of twigs for a month or so but soon comes back. It’s a complete monster though, I believe the polite term is vigorous, and would swallow the house if left to its own devices Grin

Mine was new in 2019, got going in a wispy sort of way, was still flowering in November 2020, then just went all brown and straw like. Nothing doing last year and this year it has started to grow again from the root.

Mine has stayed evergreen all winter and looks fine. Maybe yours has some frost damage or doesn't like the damp? Mine is growing in a sheltered spot and we have sandy soil.
