I just can't remember when it starts flowering so not sure whether to prune or not. One thing I do know is that it was still flowering in September. Can anyone tell by looking at the photo? Thanks in advance!

ummm, it'll be 2 or likely 3. TO be on the safe side, cut back a fair amount to a fat bud.

Taylors Clematis is a specialist clematis nursery. Maybe you could trawl through their site and try to identify it? You can filter by colour/flowering time etc

We've got one called Ville de Lyon that looks like that. It's definitely summer flowering. Most of the early ones are white or pale pink

Ok thanks all. Looks like it definitely isn't group 1.

Yes, definitely not group 1.

Group 2 are spring/summer flowering, group 3 are late summer flowering.

You won’t harm the plant by pruning it wrong, just reduce the number of flowers. So do your best guess and see how it goes. You can always try the other group next year.

Eye-catching threads in ‘gardening’ (popping up in ‘active’) today, what with lasagne planting and this one, which I thought was concerning the whereabouts of a very niche club! You live and learn Flowers Smile Flowers

Looks very much like the type you cut right back to 30cm (can't remember what number that is). Although I forgot to do mine last year, and it was fine, just a bit woody/bare at the bottom.

That's group 3 :)

Ville de Lyon or Ernest Markham. Cut back to knee height on Valentines Day (or now if you like).
