What is this beautiful plant?

Does anyone have any idea what this gorgeous plant/tree in this picture is? We have a north facing garden and it looks perfect for providing light screening in front of the patio without blocking any sunlight.

Not the clearer picture but looks like an acer. Do the leaves turn gorgeous colours in autumn?

I don't know what the leaves look like in other seasons - I just saw it while stalking the Catherine Lancy garden design website for inspiration. Thanks all for the acer suggestions - I'll look into those further.
