Can I still plant bulbs

yorkshireteaparty · 04/01/2022 13:18

I have some tulip bulbs and Persian buttercups (ranunculus) but I've not managed to plant them yet. I've done endless googling but I don't feel confident deciding what to do. Can anyone advise me if I plant them in containers now will they bloom this spring?

I'd like to know this too. Managed to plant my daffodils but still got a box of languishing tulips! Probably too late isn't it...

Following!

Harrysmummy246 · 04/01/2022 13:21

Tulips will be fine and you can spring plant Ranunculus anyway

yorkshireteaparty · 04/01/2022 13:22

Yeah I got daffs and snowdrops in the ground in late October/November, but dithered over where to put the tulips and ranunculus. I'm new to gardening and can't picture how it will look once the spring bulbs (hopefully) come up. So was thinking I'd put them in a pot. But I don't want to water them if it's too late. Hopefully someone can help Smile

Thanks @Harrysmummy246 . Could I plant the ranunculus now or is it best to wait?

I'm doing this tomorrow
Tulips should be 9k according to the lovely Monty Don

I planted up my tulips in early January last year (both pots and beds) and they came up fine - just a couple of weeks later than usual.

Harrysmummy246 · 04/01/2022 13:25

Go for it @yorkshireteaparty. I've got some I'm about to do when I've finished clearing enough space in the utility room to put the pots down (lack of greenhouse/ potting shed just now)

They prefer to be well drained so if you have clay soil, I'd wait but otherwise crack on

MrsJamin · 04/01/2022 13:26

I'd stick them in a pot together, tulips lower down and ranunculus layer on top, bulb lasagne style. What else would you do with them if you didn't plant them?

yorkshireteaparty · 04/01/2022 13:26

Wonderful thanks everyone!

Please tell me more about bulb lasagne!
Ilikecakes · 04/01/2022 13:30

I planted 200 alliums and 100 ranunculus yesterday, after dithering over the same question for a few days. Delays in delivery meant they only arrived with me just before Christmas and I’ve only now found the time to get them in. Complete novice gardener here, so I’m relieved at the responses above. The bit of googling I did also said that they should be fine, but will probably flower later. I just figured they were better off in the ground than in my cupboard under the stairs, what’s the worst that can happen?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Edieunion · 04/01/2022 13:32

I planted a load of daffs and tulips yesterday OP. I forgot about them and found the bulbs were all starting to sprout in the bags! Fingers crossed they'll be ok, they may just bloom a little later.

yorkshireteaparty · 04/01/2022 13:42

I meant to say I didn't want to "waste" them but it autocorrected to "water" them in an earlier post.
So glad I asked and there's a few of us pondering the same. I've barely touched my garden this winter and I'm itching to do a bit of something until the spring bulbs pop up. I'm going to go for it and plant them in a container ( I can't remember where all the other bulbs in the actual garden are now).
Bulb lasagne sounds good too, I read about this when I was planting the daffodils etc but didn't try it

I got some tulips in January sale and they were fine last year

halfpasteleven · 04/01/2022 14:04

Sorry to jump on this thread but I have some hyacinths to plant- would I be ok to plant them now? Outside in soil or I'm outside in pots so I can take them in if weather gets frosty? Thanks

EarringsandLipstick · 04/01/2022 14:30

Delighted to find this thread! In a clear out of my utility room yesterday I found a whole bag of bulbs & was so annoyed at myself. Now I'll give them all a go!

Will be interested to see what happens!

HelloDulling · 04/01/2022 14:37

Absolutely. I always hoover up a load in the Sarah Raven sale and they tend to arrive just before Christmas, so get ignored until the New Year.

Pollingbadly · 04/01/2022 14:39

I would put them in the fridge for a few days and then plant them.

Esspee · 04/01/2022 15:00

I deliberately keep my tulip bulbs to at least the end of December, normally plant daffs etc. earlier. Whatever you have get them in now before the frosts arrive.

TulipsGarden · 05/01/2022 11:33

I planted a load of tulips yesterday. They just need a cold spell, which they'll get before spring.

Planted 30 of the buggers today, encouraged by this thread!
