Hello... not quite gardening, but I was sent this lovely bouquet at Christmas. Can anyone tell me what the big purple flowers are?

Flower ID please?

They look like roses?

Upupupintheair · 02/01/2022 21:45

Ranunculus?

ApolloandDaphne · 02/01/2022 21:45

Ranunculus

LightSpeeds · 02/01/2022 21:45

Ranunculus?

Beekeeper1 · 02/01/2022 21:46

Look like roses to me too!

Skeumorph · 02/01/2022 21:48

Peony possibly? Or ranunculus

Beekeeper1 · 02/01/2022 21:49

Although, on closer inspection, Ranunculus, as suggested above, is more of a possibility

AllLopsided · 02/01/2022 22:18

Thank you all - they are definitely ranunculus! Going to see if I can grow some this year!

That's an interesting bouquet. The smaller flowers are a type of clematis aren't they - I wouldn't have thought of using them as a cut flower but they work well. Did they last long?

AllLopsided · 03/01/2022 01:49

Yes I think they are clematis! Sent through French interflora from Australian relatives. I know the local florist they used and they are generally good. I couldn't find the bouquet online (was looking to see if I could find it to identify the flowers). I love purple and I thought it was beautiful and unusual (I know too that sometimes when you ask for purple flowers you get pink or blue!) . It lasted well, looked perfect for a good week. Arrived on the 24th and is still OK - some of the clematis have drooped today and the ranunculus look like they might start to drop petals soon - but it did pretty well for this time of year!

Thanks! I might try bringing in a bit of the superabundance of clematis Montana I should have in a few months.Smile

The little ones on the edge are clematis - look at the leaves. Agree the rose-like ones are probably ranunculus, but possibly eustoma/lisianthus?? Look at these:
