Currently in a shallow pot, should I put this guy in the ground before winter hits?

Is it a tradescantia? If you are in the UK then it needs winter protection as it won't be able to tolerate hard frosts. You might be lucky outside if you are in the far south west.

Makes a good houseplant this - I've kept mine inside for ages and only moved it to the greenhouse last summer, where it's been quite happy too.

Maybe take a cutting or two, grow these on indoors and keep this one outside/under cover - then if it doesn't make it through the winter you've still got the plant (or plants) to replace it!

Thanks @LizLemonsGlasses and @cuttlefishgame. Yes it's a tradescantia, not the delicate little ones you get as house plants though. Spiderwort/Purple Heart.

Cuttings are a good shout, I've already taken one cutting that is doing well indoors, although is a lot more green than purple.

A house that I walk past regularly has this growing in their front garden (in the ground) so I wondered if it was frost resistant if sheltered enough. I just wasn't sure about keeping it in the pot or whether the ground might give it a better chance. Perhaps pot will be better so that I can bring it indoors to overwinter.
