Fence saga neighbours

Long story I'll try to be brief , afew years ago before Covid my neighbour mentioned in a passing if we would contribute towards the materials for her fence , it's a big fence on her side , and it looked appalling from our side so I agreed I would contribute towards materials due to really wanting to tidy it up on our side and make it look nice , anyway nothing happened after that , then this year she mentioned it again, after thinking about it we agreed we would still go half's on materials, didn't really want to at that point due to it not being my fence and money was tight since Covid, but we still agreed because we wanted fence to look nice on our side. So work started in February this year , we stated before hand if they was working in our garden we wanted it left clean and tidy and work to be completed in a timely manner , she agreed and said the fence would be up within weeks , it was her husband doing the work and he's managed to get 6 fence panels up since February leaving 6 panels unfinished , in July they asked for full money we owed for materials , due to it not being finished I agreed to give them half the money for materials and the rest on completion of the fence , well since then her and her husband have been ignoring us and not made an effort to finish the fence , I think they think we are withholding money I don't know , I clearly said they would get the money when job completed , it's baffled me as all the new fence panels are just dumped in there garden getting damaged wet etc , I have 3 small children under 8 who love playing in garden and 2 dogs who could potentially escape due to being a big gapping hole where it's not finished , should I just give them the remaining money in hope they will finish the fence ?

No, just put your own fence up on your side! This is why you should never contribute to something that is not your legal responsibility.

No don't give them the money and write off what's already given. Cheaply fence your own side with something (you're responsible for fencing your own dog in) and if they ask again, tell them due to their dawdling you've spent the money on your own fence and they'll get nothing more. They could have fenced the whole thing completely start to finish in a few hours. Can't see what benefit there is to them of putting up one panel per month. Doesn't seem like they're bothered about having a fence so this was possibly a money making exercise to start with. If you'd given them what they wanted in the first place they'd have maybe not changed the fence at all and spent it on something else.

Also did you do your own research on costs of materials? They could have been charging you for the whole fence and telling you it was for half .

Yes I asked for receipts and only paid for the materials I could see finished in my garden

i think it was a mistake to contribute to a fence that’s not your responsibility. But if it was done out of the kindness of your heart, then i’d make damn sure the fence was done by a proper fencing company, not by somme half wit that can’t be bothered.
As it is, i’d put something appropriate up to keep the dog in.

CFs even asking for a contribution.
I agree just make it safe for the dog and DC's and be glad you didn't get mugged for any more cash.
