New pond

Hopefully my photos will post..they haven't been working lately. We have a new pond (very exciting!) and have been given some pond weed and a lily. Do I need to actually plant the lily in a special pot or should it be ok just floating on the surface? Am new to all this!
Thank you.

There's a growing guide here:

You need a pot and some low nutrient aquatic compost. It needs to anchor its roots in soil

In addition to the pot (a holey baskety type) and aquatic compost, get some gravel to top it off with. Then follow the advice about gradually lowering it down - in your case looks like the pond water level will be raised too.

Don't be worried when it dies back, they do in winter. Just take off the dead leaves so they're not rotting in the water.

@MereDintofPandiculation..thanks for the advice Smile

@ErrolTheDragon.. thanks..that's great. We have the grit already and so just need the pot and aquatic compost. It's only a little spindly thing that someone fished out of their pond. They said just drop it in as it is and it will be fine!
