Pot or border for agapanthus?

Jericha · 29/08/2021 22:21

My mum is very kindly giving me some of her white agapanthus tomorrow and I'm not sure on the best place to plant it, or how large it may grow, please can I have some advice? I'm a relative (but keen) novice to gardening and this is our first summer in our new (and hopefully very long term) house.

I do have a space in a SW position in a border at the front of the house. I also have a smaller amount of space in SW facing back garden border, or I can put it in a glazed pot on the patio that's also SW facing (saw they like sun, so assume SW is best with my layout).

Thank you!

Border, they won't divide if too cramped. Not under the washing line, they get tall. yeah DH I'm looking at you.

@Postdatedpandemic thank you! Duly noted about the washing line Grin

Mine are in a pot and do well, I've not tried dividing them just potted up. I collected seed last year and have lots of young plants, I think they'll take quite a while to get to flowering size and may be variable.

@ErrolTheDragon when was the best time to collect agapanthus seed in terms of what the flower looks like please? Thanks in advance.

I also heard that you should feed Agapanthus with tomato feed in spring. I bought some really lovely agapanthus this year.

I posted on a thread last year, so while I don't know if it's the best time I do know when I collected the seedGrin

Mine started from 3 bulbs iirc probably in a pot a bit bigger than yours Jane- can't remember how long ago.
This photo is from the start of the month - I think I need a larger pot again!

Mine are in pots

Letting it set seed last year doesn't seem to have harmed its flowering this year, I just went out and counted 27 heads.Grin

I probably need to pot on the seedlings in the back of the coldframe (they're just there for space) as they're smaller than the ones in larger pots at the front.

Thanks all, and lovely photos @MyNameIsJane. I am going to stick them in the border I think.

We've saved some space in our new border to plant the agapanthus we're going to bring back from our silver wedding anniversary trip to Isles of Scilly next month. They grow beautifully everywhere over there.

MyNameIsJane · 30/08/2021 14:24

@Jericha Thank you!

Oh @ErrolTheDragon, yours are lovely! Thank you for the seedhead info too. The agapanthus in the pictures were purchased from Farmer Gracy (you might have seen advertised on FB or IG) and I separated both root bundles and got 4 successful bunches.

Hi op they are lovely flowers very archtectural! I also have a thing for white flowers. I have read that they don't like clay soil so check your soil before making a decision.

Jericha · 30/08/2021 15:44

@choirmumoftwo how wonderful, congratulations on your anniversary next month.

@Frederik33 thank you that's a really good point, I'm not sure what the soil is like out there so will go and have a prod and find out first before I get too committed!

Hi op you're welcome, I read that the reason our Monty puts his in pots is because Longmeadow has clay soil.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/08/2021 18:05

That's interesting - some of my borders are heavy clay so perhaps just as well mine are in a pot. I was planning on putting some of the offspring into borders in due course, perhaps I'd better rethink that. Because the best answer to the OP is bed and border.Grin

@ErrolTheDragon oooh yes I like your thinking Smile

I had a beautiful blue one in a pot, read that they can get pot bound and not thrive so moved it to a border, it only survived one season. It was gorgeous, I'm still annoyed with myself .....

Pokhora · 01/09/2021 17:11

Mine have overtaken my border so I will be moving some into pots.
