Laurel bush cut right back - will it regrow quickly?

Hi all,

I’m not very green fingered so hoping someone can help! My father in law offered to “tidy” the Laurel bushes out the front. My husband agreed and then found the hedge has been reduced by a third.

We live on a busy main road and it was giving us a bit of privacy from the many passers by (this was the reason we planted these bushes five years ago). We also want to sell in the new year so are keen to get the Laurel bush back to the height it was ASAP.

I thought trying to put some fertiliser near the roots will help… will it? I know it’ll grow as it can withstand severe pruning, but so keen for it to grow as fast as possible.

Thanks in advance!

It'll be fine.

I reckon ours grows about a metre a year, and we never put any fertiliser on it. So, it depends how much a third of the height of your hedge is! It will probably be good if you want to sell next year as all the new growth can have a quick trim and it will look very neat.

It's about 60cm so this is giving me hope. I just hate looking at it right now, looking at artificial laurel solutions and new blinds! Thanks everyone

Ours are back to as they were after 18 months.

Yes, the bastards are unkillable. This prune will make them come back more vigorous and bushier than before, and you should do it most years

I took mine to the ground and it was back to 4ft within 2years. They are one of the fasted growing shrubs around

Oh this is making me feel loads better! Just need new blinds for the meantime 😀
