I found this vine in an overgrown part of the garden. I have a lot of bindweed which I am familiar with but this is a dark purpley brown. It is growing up a self seeded tree. No flowers found yet. Any ideas please?

Hopefully it isn't anything alarming. I'm still working on the bindweed, nettles and brambles!

Black bryony, Dioscorea communis (syn. Tamus communis) Member of the yam family. Lovely strings of berries in the autumn. Poisonous. Not related to white bryony.

If it were mine, I’d definitely be keeping it.

Thanks!

I've googled black briony now and had a look at the pics lots of which show green leaves - do they start off green?

I've got a lot of bindweed in the garden (I've seen the white trumpet shaped flowers) but I've also seen strings of berries. I'm wondering whether some of what I thought was bindweed is actually black briony.
