Small tree near underground pipes

The mains water, drainage and soil pipe run across our back garden but I would very much like a small tree. Due to the layout and paved areas the maximum distance from pipework to tree would be about 2 and a half meters. Is there a suitable tree for the space or should I get a big container and keep it in that?

How about a Japanese maple? They grow well in containers.
