I was thinking of getting something like this that recycles the water - has to be up highish as the dog would just spend all day in a pond....

It says you have to clean and top up the water, add an algae treatment (is that safe if the dog laps it?) and to turn it off rather than leaving it running. Seems a bit hard work tbh.

We advise that you clean and top up the water on a regular basis. Adding an algae prevention treatment to the fountain will avoid the build-up of algae and keep the water clean and clear. This can be added to your shopping basket as an accessory. Always shut off the power before cleaning and maintaining the pump. Never allow the fountain pump to run dry. It is not recommended to leave the fountain running constantly. We suggest turning the fountain on/off when required

I've linked my container pond (old water tank) to a downpipe so it acts as a water butt. I have an overflow hose back to the drain. It keeps the water fresh and clear, and the dog just happily drinks from it.
