Creeper for west-facing wall

I'd like to plant a creeper in a large pot next to my front door, and train it onto a trellis against the brickwork. The wall in question faces west, so gets a lot of hot afternoon sun. I don't want anything too huge and rampant, but to me the outside of the house looks a bit stark and a creeper would help to soften it.

I'm a shocking novice with gardening and so have no idea what might work in this situation. I tried a clematis but it died (I think it was perhaps too hot for it). I'd be very grateful for any pointers. Smile
