Thoughts welcome, please. I've always thought I had irises planted here. This flower has bloomed today and looks more like a lily to me. I'm not finding Google very helpful!
There are lots of buds on each stalk.

That's a lily

NanTheWiser · 18/07/2021 10:59

It’s a day lily - Hemerocallis.

Silkiecats · 18/07/2021 10:59

Lily

BigMamaFratelli · 18/07/2021 10:59

I didn't initially clock this was in gardening and was expecting it to be about baby namesGrin

Silkiecats · 18/07/2021 11:00

So did I Grin but the answer is Lily to both.

Chasingsquirrels · 18/07/2021 11:00

Day lily

BigMamaFratelli · 18/07/2021 11:02

Oh see I was going to say iris for the baby name @Silkiecats

WorriedWishingWell · 18/07/2021 11:07

Grin definitely plant ID, not asking for baby names Grin
Thank you everyone. Although bit worried now as I have a cat and I know (some) lilies are highly toxic for cats.

@NanTheWiser

It’s a day lily - Hemerocallis.
This was the suggestion that came up for both "orange iris" and "orange lily"

Well the OP will just need to have twins then BigMama one Lily, one Iris.

At our old house we had exactly that lily - B&Qs finest Grin - and our cat was often sitting next to it. She's still here at nearly 17 but they are highly toxic to cats if they try to eat them.

TheQueef · 18/07/2021 11:13

Can I geg in please, if yours is a day Lily what's mine?
It's one of the few flowers I thought I knew!

TheQueef · 18/07/2021 11:14

Pic will help.

Lily or iris?
Chasingsquirrels · 18/07/2021 11:14

Tigridia (not sure on spelling). Love them.

TheQueef · 18/07/2021 11:22

Thanks Squirrels I'd never heard of them Grin I've confidently told everyone they are day lillies (cos the flower only lasts a day) I like the yellow ones best they seem to be florescent.

Twins called Lily and Iris would be wonderful, and also a medical miracle at my age!
I've just looked at the list of toxic plants on the Cats Protection League site and it seems about half the plants in my garden are supposedly toxic to cats. And yet she's been with us for 3 years and survived. 🤷‍♀️
I think I'll have to dispose of the lilies though given their level of toxicity, and she'll have to take her chances with the azalea, poppies, Holly, snowdrops, clematis...

I've moved my lillies into pots too high for the cats WWW but on another thread I found out enev the leaves are poisonous.
I think mine are going on the bin. Shame because they are survivors Smile

This thread has just shattered a long held belief! I was reminded of the JohnSinger Sargent painting Carnation Lily Lily Rose which I like a lot and always thought was called that because the little girls were called Lily and Rose and JSS was having a bit of fun by painting them in a garden. But no, turns out they were called Dolly (Dorothy) and Polly, the title came from a song.

Missed opportunity there JSS, missed opportunity.

Sorry, thread detour, as you were.
