I bought this last autumn reduced in a garden centre labelled as Annabelle. Looks suspiciously like Limelight to me now it is starting to flower….

I agree it's not Annabelle. I think it could be hydrangea paniculata Kyushu.

Yes it could that one also. Is annoying as I wanted an Annabelle for ages and was delighted to see it reduced in price. This is nice… but it is not Annabelle!

What did the label/barcode say?

Morningmaeve · 16/07/2021 09:18

The flowers will turn pinkish eventually if it is Limelight so I guess I just wait and see…. Smile

Definitely not Anabelle which is a mophead. Hydrangeas seem to be particularly bad for being mislabelled. I bought five Vanille Fraise about eight years ago and they are similar to each other but not the same, three of one and two of the other. It's annoying because they are all in the same circular bed so it's clear that it's two different types.

I can’t find the label but I have the receipt which has hydrangea Arb Annabelle on it. I’ll definitely flag it up with the garden centre. My white lupins turned out pink but they were £2 from Wilko - didn’t expect same problem with £50 hydrangea!

You spent £50 on a hydrangea? Was it a ginormous specimen? It seems like a lot - even if it was £50 and you got it reduced it's still a lot.

Sarah Raven's got Annabelle for £17.95, Parkers have got 3 for £12!

In fairness to the OP the ones J Parker's are selling are very small.

Morningmaeve · 16/07/2021 13:26

No! It was £50 before it was reduced to half price. And even that is a lot so that’s why I am annoyed it isn’t what the label promised

And yes it was that price because it was a fairly big plant

The wrong fairly big plant as it turns out!

I’m lucky that there is a fairly decent plant stall at our local market. I’d wanted an Annabelle for ages too & got one there a few months ago. I think it was around £16. The seller seemed knowledgeable so was hopeful it would not be a dud. I’m very pleased with it so far!

Maybe Little Lime?

Annabelle comes really easily from cuttings, if you see one just ask for a few bits and shove them in a pot.

Morningmaeve · 18/07/2021 19:06

Yes maybe Little Lime. A few varieties it could be I think. Garden centre have said they’ll refund me if I take this one back to them… is it strange that I feel bad digging it up after months in my garden? I don’t really have room for two unfortunately @Purplewithred but interesting to know Annabelle does well from cuttings
