I dont know why front garden and privacy about driveway is very important to than rear garden . i chose a plot which offers big front garden and small rear garden. Am i doing anything wrong as i have been questioned by few ? give me your thoughts please . rear garden might be couple of metres small than rest of similar houses on development. length is same but it gets narrow at rear garden by 2 metres.

Front gardens are for showing off and driveways.
Rear gardens are for entertaining, relaxing g and playing.

I find my front garden stressful as I have no idea how to look after the plants the previous owner put in. But the driveway is useful.

whatisthisinhere · 13/07/2021 09:55

I would choose a bigger rear garden, but I don't like sitting outside because I live on a busy road near a station in London. I think it would depend on how busy the front is

PaulaPetunia · 13/07/2021 09:57

I like both equally until it's time to sit out!
The front welcomes you home all year round. It can give privacy too of course. The back I focus more on summer colour and interest.

Cooldryplace · 13/07/2021 09:58

For me the front garden needs to be today and big enough for car parking. The if choices were the difference between one and two parking spaces, I'd go for the bigger, but indont want a front garden to big indeed to spend a lot of time gardening out there

The back garden is my relaxing and entertaining space. If doesn't need to be huge, but it does need to be big enough.

Cooldryplace · 13/07/2021 09:59

Grrr ....*today....tidy

Silkiecats · 13/07/2021 10:00

Definitely rear garden as its enclosed so safer for kids and pets. But if you prefer the front that's fine, go for what you prefer.

notsogreenthumb · 13/07/2021 10:12

It's whatever you prefer really. I personally prefer rear garden as it's more private/green and away from the main road.

Front gardens to me are just a decorative piece of the house that welcome you in and house the driveway. Usually if people have tidy front gardens I assume they have tidy homes and are organised. Not sure if that's weird but I subconsciously form an opinion of the rest of the house from the front. (Ironic as I live in a rental and our front is such a junkyard but the back and inside are lovely BlushGrin)

rear garden is at 13 m by 12 by patio and it gets narrower to 10 by 12 m. Front garden is extra 12 metre along with kerb and 6 m wide.

Driveway is for two cars double 6 by 6 m. i have not seen the plot yet . rear garden is private.

A rear garden is for us, the front is for parking.

MilduraS · 13/07/2021 10:52

My front garden is a barren mess of rubble and weeds with a small driveway in desperate need of replacing. We're planning to get it done at some point but it's quite low on the list of expensive jobs we need to do. The rear garden is well used and we'll be replacing the old decking with paving well before sorting out the driveway. I spend minutes in my front garden whereas I spend hours in the back garden.

Tumbleweed101 · 13/07/2021 11:46

My front and back gardens are both private from the street and drive way comes in at side as its a corner plot. My front garden is the bigger garden and west facing so I tend to spend more time out there for relaxing. This year I've really worked on making it nicer. The disadvantage is the neighbours comings and goings can be disturbing. My back garden is smaller but big enough. I tend to have washing out there and all the utility type stuff plus this is where the dogs have free access so there is a risk of poo etc. It is also overlooked on three sides by neighbours back gardens so tends to be noisier for that reason. I intend to work on making that garden nicer next year.

For context, I'm a full time working mum. My youngest is now 12 so I finally have a chance to work on the gardens in a way I didn't have time for a few years back. They've tended to be a bit untidy for the last few years.

Tumbleweed101 · 13/07/2021 11:47

Single mum should be in there too. I have no help with house and gardens.

Powertothepetal · 13/07/2021 13:56

I absolutely love my front garden!
I prioritise that one as everyone sees it walking past my house.
It’s filled with lovely colourful flowers for most of the year and I am in the process of making a nice, private seating area within it.

My back garden I haven’t devoted as much time and attention to, its okay but needs a lot more plant life, it’s used more for the kids really.
We do have a nice patio going in soon which I’m really looking forward to and the dreaded MN inflatable sex pond Grin

LemonViolet · 13/07/2021 15:44

Priority in terms of buying a house or where you spend your effort gardening?

Personally I’m all about my back garden, that is my piece of this planet, where I’m creating my own little world to enjoy just for me and mine, and any visiting wildlife. The front is just for the car and bins…. it’s completely paved at the moment, I will at some point invest in some massive planters to green it up, and ideally I’d like to get some proper beds put in, but it’s way down the list of things to spend money on right now with a whole house to do up. I really don’t care how big the front is as long as the car and bins fit there, but the back, I wanted as big as I could get.

LemonViolet · 13/07/2021 15:46

Btw @Powertothepetal I do like a sex pond as well, we are seriously considering a permanent wooden one! Although DP is trying to ban me from calling it a sex pond.

Comefromaway · 13/07/2021 15:47

My back garden is more important as that is where I spend the most time but having a lot of parking space on the drive was very important to me.

Priority in where I spend my time gardening, but a spacious front and back garden is the first thing I look for in a house!

Back garden absolutely, tbf buying in London proper front gardens are fairly rare things, we’re lucky to have a driveway.

I wasn’t really joking when I kept saying I was buying “a garden with a nice house” when we were looking!

Nanalisa60 · 13/07/2021 18:18

Rear is the most important for must be south west facing.

RoseMartha · 13/07/2021 18:24

If I had a garden I would prefer a back garden.

If I had a front and back garden I would like the back to be bigger than the front. Somewhere off road to park my car a bonus.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 13/07/2021 21:53

That is a decent sized back garden and a very large front one. My back garden is 9x15m and it's not big but feels big enough. I have space for sitting, play equipment, veg growing and some flowers in that.

Personally I grow as much as I can in the small space available to me at the front beside the parking spaces - which is about 6x4m. My kids do play in the front garden, because we live on a cul de sac it's safe and quiet enough.

There are a few houses around which have a much larger front than back garden and have it well fenced and use it just like most people use the back.

As long as you think it will work for your family set up and needs that is all that matters.

hatebeingstressedout · 14/07/2021 11:49

lovely to hear views of you all. Guess it depends whether you still get average size garden . very small garden compare to front garden can put buyers off.
I am going ahead with plot . Builder will be planting two trees in front garden hopefully will give me enough space to put what i want . Front garden is south west facing and rear garden is north east facing but no other plots available in similar style . i can reserve one which will be by main road and i dont want to go for it . what is point pf having sunny rear garden when i can hear all cars / lorries noise and pollution on top it .
