Autumn Bulbs where to buy

NotwatchingSpooks · 11/07/2021 20:23

I’m hoping for some recommendations , I am currently redoing my garden, after a few years of not planting any bulbs I really need to replant both the front and back borders.

Any recommendations of where to buy online.

Any recommendations for specific bulbs which have been lovely would be wonderful too.

Thanks so much

Bloms or Walkers.
Blomsbulbs.com
Bulbs.co.uk

My favourite tulips are Princess Irene.

I've just put an order in with Farmer Gracy (they ship from the Netherlands in late September- October) and Sarah Raven (shipping from U.K. in September). This is my first year using both.

I've gone for a mix of pink and white mistral anemones, allium "purple sensation", iris "purple hill", crocus "pickwick" and "flower record", some snakehead fritillaries. Last year I went through a pink flower phase, this year it seems to be lots of purples 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had some snowdrops in the green from Sarah Raven earlier in the year which will hopefully come up. I took some photos when I planted them so fingers crossed, I can use those to avoid disturbing them when adding the other bulbs!

The Sarah Raven brochure popped though my door earlier on today…. 😍

MilduraS · 12/07/2021 13:27

@Flaunch mine too... but I forgot to use the 10% discount code in my excitement!

Flaunch · 12/07/2021 13:33

Oh no!!

You’re very eager ordering already! I’ll be on the scribbling on the brochure stage for a few weeks yet. I need to do better than last year, my Farmer Gracy tulips weren’t what I expected this spring at all. I might just go with Sarah’s suggestions.

I used Farmer Gracy last year, and their bulbs came up beautifully. Princess Irene are also a favourite of mine! I also bought some bare root plants which didn't do so well, but perhaps that was my fault.

I bought some cheap bulbs from Peter Nyssen in the sale and they didn't do so well, some mouldy and some came up damaged.

I use Gee Tee.... Very good prices IMO and a wide range of varieties.

Thank you so much, I’ve ordered the Sarah Raven brochure and will be using your recommendations

The Clare Bulb Company in Suffolk are excellent, although their website looks a bit amateur, the bulbs are excellent quality and they really know their stuff.

I've also used Farmer Gracy and they're good; don't rate Sarah Raven in general. Despite the flowers looking amazing in the brochures, I always feel a bit let down by her products.

ByeByeTrain · 12/07/2021 21:37

Jacques Amand jacquesamandintl.com/ have a fantastic selection and I've always found them to be excellent quality.

Can I suggest before you order from Sarah Raven that you check out the customer comments on facebook and trust pilot. The plants I ordered didn't arrive and many people seem to be in the same position.

lancashirelady · 14/07/2021 19:26

I ordered from Sarah Raven for the first time and my plants never arrived had to phone them to find out I wasn't getting them. My daughter also ordered some plants and again didn't get them and like me had to phone them only to be told she wouldn't be getting them. According to a senior customer advisor they always contact customers to let them know if they will not be getting their order but seeing as how my daughter and I both had to contact them not sure how true that is. I won't be using them again.

I had Sarah Raven bulbs this year and they all came up well. But I thought I would give Farmer Gracy a try this year as they are cheaper.

The mistake I made last year was not ordering perennial tulips from Sarah Raven. Easily spent £100! I did notice her catalogue this year clearly states those which are perennial so I will be focusing on those this year (albeit probably buying from farmer gracy but the SR catalogue is lovely!).

TonTonMacoute · 15/07/2021 12:09

I have never had a problem with Sarah Raven - other than the price! I now tend to use her catalogue as inspiration (I have also got her book) and buy elsewhere.

Have ordered my bulbs from Farmer Gracy this year though, so am pleased to hear positive experiences here!

Deereamer · 15/07/2021 18:10

I love farmer Gracy. It’s my favourite place to online shopping. I could spend a fortune there!

NotwatchingSpooks · 17/07/2021 10:06

Thank you so much, I now have a long list and am trying to work out how many to buy.

I ordered bulbs from Parkers last year, tulips (Princess Irene), February Gold daffodils, crocus and allium Christophii, plus some free gift daffodils. We moved in November, so they were planted late, despite this they all grew well and were very good value.
I've used Bloms in the past, more expensive but excellent quality and a lot of unusual named varieties.
The perennials I've ordered from Sarah Raven this year have all done well apart from lavender which they replaced when i emailed them.
I love the colour combinations in her catalogue, great for inspiration!
Grape Hyacinths, (muscari) are another must have for your list.
