Why isn't my Mock Orange Flowering

fblake · 03/07/2021 20:46

It hasn't flowered for 2 years. Not sure what I am doing wrong 😞

It flowered 3 years ago when we moved in and was beautiful!

Any comments would be welcomed!

Thank you

Bad luck. Mine is stunning this year. Has it been too dry, is the soil good quality?

EntropyBanana · 03/07/2021 20:56

Did you prune it last year? I've yet to get it right and have had woeful flowers.

Brenna24 · 03/07/2021 20:59

I don't know much about them but would guess that the issue is probably pruning at the wrong time or in the wrong way.

Thanks all, I didn't wonder whether it was due to pruning. How should this be done if it hasn't flowered?

Mine is a huge 'tree' - it is never pruned and it flowers every year. Maybe leave it and see if it flowers next year?

Pruning should be after it has flowered. They flower on last year’s stems, so if you pruned in spring, you have removed any potential flowering growth.

Thank you - all comments are really helpful.

That growth all looks very new. I’d give it a rest from pruning this year and see what happens next year. Also gives you a chance for a good look at what sort of stems it flowers on.

Prune just as it finishes flowering is a good rule of thumb for anything you’re not sure about. Exceptions are, if you want to enjoy the fruit, obviously don’t prune flowering stems, and if it’s an autumn flowerer, you may like to delay pruning till early spring.

Jumping on the band wagon here! Love mock orange blossom and planted one in spring this year. I've had loads of blossoms (Sorry fblake Blush) but no idea how often I should prune it, every year or give it a couple of years to settle in and then prune??? Any tips gratefully received!
