Wisteria ideas please

Hi all
I'm not an expert at all so hoping some can advise.
I have a wisteria, new as a gift, quite small about half a metre. Not sure what to do with it.
Not keen to attach it to a fence as our fences are very old and could need replacing.

I like the idea of it being a standard but I think it may have been grown to climb.
Can anyone offer any advice please? I'm excited to have one but am clueless! Smile

Marking my spot as I’d love to grow some over my porch.

Train it up a garden obelisk in a border or around a doorway or window?

Gosh so much, they grow like weeds. Is there any area of the house you’d like to grow it round? Or buy a climbing frame/obelisk for it, but will need regular pruning as they grown massive.

I've seen some beautiful examples of wisterias that have been trained as standards, and yours sounds about the right size to start, but you have to begin with some ruthless pruning.

Pruning and no expectation. A small one we had like that took a decade to flower. I’ve had a grafted one since which has flowered year 2. I find them voracious but flowering is temperamental even with judicious pruning.

Thanks all.
Mine has 3 small branches to it if that makes sense so would that be able to be made into a standard?
I will also look into the obelisk.

Here are photos of my wisteria, does this look like its too late to grow it as a standard? Sorry I'm clueless!

I'm sure that it's not too late. Just take a deep breath and chop off the two side branches. Then loosely tie the remaining branch to a stake and keep it well fed and watered and pinch off any side shoots as it grows until it gets to the height that you want.

Just noticed that you've got a red stemmed sucker growing up from the root. That needs to be cut out as close as possible to the main plant.

You could do something nice with the three existing branches, a sort of goblet shape and bring them together higher up (wherever you can bend them to without snapping them) and then plait them, which would be pretty. Or if you want to train it up an obelisk then the three are fine, you can wrap them all around it. My parents have a lovely standard/bush wisteria, which is multi stemmed and trained around a tall narrow obelisk. It's stunning.
