Plant to cover pillar

We have a big ugly pillar / gate post at the front of the house. I want a plant to cover it. There's no soil so I need something that can grow in a container. I planted a clematis last spring but it doesn't grow thickly enough, probably because it's in a container. What can I grow that would be more vigorous? I was thinking maybe some ivy although it would probably take over completely and choke the poor clematis?

Thanks for the recommendation. I forgot to say it's south facing so a passionflower might do well.

A very big pot, lots of well rotted manure and compost mixed and a Rambling Rector. They are easy and prolific, beautiful coverage although they drop their leaves in winter.
