Daisies

I have a really small lawn which I am hoping to make bigger now that I have pulled the shed down. It’s a really small area but has made a proper difference to the feel.
I would like to level the rest of the lawn and plant some grass seed to thicken it.
Unfortunately the grass is full of daisies. They were charming in the beginning but I’m over them now.
I am looking for recommendations for weed killer. I have a dog that can go and stay at my parents as most are toxic.
Planning on getting a ton of topsoil.

Aww daisies are lovely! Just keep mowing them if you don’t want to see the flowers.

Powertothepetal · 28/06/2021 18:48

You are very unlikely to find a good recommendation for weed killer here as most of us are completely opposed to weed killer as it’s entirely unnecessary in most circumstances and hazardous to the environment.

Grass never naturally grows alone.
It just doesn’t happen, it naturally grows with wildflowers like daisies, buttercups, clover, dandelion, malva etc etc and it looks far more attractive that way.

Ettie · 28/06/2021 18:54

Can you show a photo? 🌸

NoSquirrels · 29/06/2021 07:18

Embrace the daisies! But if you won’t, then reseeding/turfing the whole lot again is your best bet.

To be honest, if you’ve got a dog your lawn is unlikely to remain perfect so you might need to rethink your expectations!

Mydogisagentleman · 29/06/2021 08:57

Definitely not expecting a perfect lawn, just wanted fewer daisies.
I have ordered a grubber so initially I’ll try to pick them out.
DD is home from university in about a month. I’ll offer her a tenner per 1000 grubbed out!

I wish my lawn grew daisies. It just seems to grow clover.

Itsokthanks · 29/06/2021 09:00

Weed killer for daisies! Really?

Bluntness100 · 29/06/2021 09:03

You want weed killer to take out the daisies? That’s quite unusual. Generally they are seen as lovely. When you cut the grass they go. Anyway, resolva weed killer will do it if you really must.

Crabbyboot · 29/06/2021 09:15

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I wish my lawn grew daisies. It just seems to grow clover.
Funnily enough my partner seeded our lawn with clover seeds Grin it's more eco friendly it stays green with less water but we did it for our tortoises mainly!

OP think of the bees they will love the daisies!

RickOShay · 29/06/2021 09:19

I love the daisies in the lawn. Just pull them out. No weed killer. It’s so bad for everything.

yumscrumfatbum · 29/06/2021 09:25

We have tons of daisies in our lawn, they reappear within days of cutting it. I don't want to put pesticides on my lawn( I have a dog who can't go elsewhere) I've found cutting the lawn less and not cutting as short makes a difference to their spread throughout the season.

BonnyEm · 29/06/2021 09:26

I came here hoping to find tips for getting daisies to grow in a lawn... going away disappointed.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/06/2021 10:09

Bonnyem

I once dug some up out of my mums lawn and planted them in mine. They spread all over the lawn

megletthesecond · 29/06/2021 10:23

How are the daisies hurting you?

Powertothepetal · 29/06/2021 11:00

@BonnyEm
You can buy them as plug plants online; the small lawn daisies or the big ox eye daisies or you can get plugs of chamomile which have loads of apple scented daisy flowers.
German chamomile is tall and roman chamomile is a low creeping plant.

Or dig some out of existing lawn, as long as the roots are largely undamaged they should take and grow.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/06/2021 19:37

So... the OPs DD now needs to set up as a small online supplier of daisy plugs. Grin

RickOShay · 29/06/2021 20:17

Perhaps start with @BonnyEm.
No such thing as too many daisies.

BonnyEm · 30/06/2021 08:32

Yes! Send them all to me Grin Wink

Mydogisagentleman · 30/06/2021 13:45

Online daisy supplier. Could be an attention grabbing addition to DDs CV.
I have now decided that I will clear a metre wide strip along the edge.
DH plays croquet and they ruin the run of his ball.

I also clicked to see how I could encourage daisies too BonnyEm! Love the plug plant idea PowertothePetal I have tried adding wildflower seeds in the past and got nowhere. Love seeing a lawn buzzing with bees on flowers.
