Review here of a number of plant id apps

Result show that, although they've improved immensely, they still make mistakes, and the advice given is to check each id against a reputable source. In other words, use the app id as a starting point not as a definitive answer

A reputable source such as posting a photo on here and letting actual gardeners identify it then. What we've been saying for years!

And they take all the fun out of the plant ID threads, they're my favourite!

Plant ID threads are the best thing on here.

I’ve tried a couple on free trials and they’ve never been as accurate as asking the collective brain of Mumsnet - but I try to limit my posts cause there’s loads in my garden I haven’t got a clue what it is (even though I probably put it in). I love other people’s plant Id threads too

I find them to be a great starting point but if course you have to use your own logic too. I also enjoy plugging in images that aren't plants and seeing what it thinks they are. Cats tail came up as a type of grass!

I do hope it didn’t come up as foxtail, cocksfoot, haresfoot, or crested dogs tail. That would not have done the cat’s self esteem much good.
