Is this Japanese Knotweed?

Hi all,

Really sorry if this is such a stupid question and you have all heard it before. We moved into a house in July last year and these weeds keep appearing on the fence on both sides.

Hoping it's nothing sinister. Grateful for any help identifying and any assistance on removal.

Thanks

Looks like bindweed

kindlekeeper · 27/06/2021 20:51

No I think it’s bind weed

Nesbo · 27/06/2021 20:53

Doesn’t look like it to me, seems more like a creeper. The knotweed I’ve seen has reddish stalks and grows upwards

Littlegoth · 27/06/2021 20:54

Bindweed, so just as bad. Burn it with fire.

TwinMum35 · 27/06/2021 20:54

Just bog standard (really annoying to get rid of but not invasive) bindweed 👍

Menier · 27/06/2021 20:55

It looks like bindweed, just pull it out

cravingmilkshake · 27/06/2021 20:56

Ah thank you so much !! We've gone from not having a garden to a huge garden! So no idea what is what. Massively appreciate your knowledge!!

Thank you Smile

That’s not bindweed, I’ve a ton of the stuff and that’s not it.

Russian vine maybe.?

PennyRoyal · 27/06/2021 20:58

Bindweed. Grows like crazy. Pull it out one day, drop of rain + a ray of sunshine and the bugger is back again!

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/06/2021 21:07

Bindweed - use weedkiller unless you're prepared to spend years digging out every bit of root.

GreyhoundG1rl · 27/06/2021 21:09

It's not Japanese Knotweed, but I don't think it's bindweed either?

campion · 27/06/2021 21:14

There's more than one type. Field bindweed is smaller. That's definitely bindweed in the pics. Hateful stuff!
Beetlebrooker · 27/06/2021 21:17

I was about to agree with GreyhoundG1rl, but I looked closer and yeah...that's bindweed. The stems curl around everything, hence the name.

Use weedkiller on the leaves then let the leaves send it down to the root system, it'll go eventually (leave it well alone until its completely dead).

We actually used this method on knotweed, in a rented house where it was rife - DH could get hold of super-strength Round Up at the time, we saturated the leaves with it and left it for WEEKS to destroy the roots. It sort of worked, never eradicated it entirely as tiny red shoots would still appear in the lawn, but we just kept mowing it...

No idea if the tight fisted landlord ever enlisted an expert to get rid of it properly.

Bluntness100 · 27/06/2021 21:39

It really doesn’t look like it to me, the leaves are huge.and the plant not that big.

Eleoura · 27/06/2021 21:42

Bindweed as others have said. I've recently bought a derelict house with a massively overgrown garden. Bindweed is coming up everywhere since it was all cleared. I joined gardeners world. They have a forum and very knowledgeable people there too. I've been asking about every weird and wonderful thing sprouting up in our garden, so worth looking at it too.

NashvilleQueen · 27/06/2021 21:45

Definitely bind weed

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 27/06/2021 21:49

Yes it's definitely bindweed. It's now illegal but if you can get glyphosphate on the leaves it responds quite well (in terms of dying) to weed killer. There you could just water it as there are no other plants to damage.

You might have to retreat for a couple of years but it would grow back weaker. When it's flowering is a good time to do it.

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/06/2021 22:27

It's not illegal in the UK as far as I am aware.

Gingernaut · 27/06/2021 22:29

Convolvulus or bindweed.

JK grows straight up, with red or red speckled stems.

GreyhoundG1rl · 27/06/2021 22:29

It's not illegal. Even Japanese Knotweed isn't "illegal" to have on your land, it's only an offence to let it spread to neighbouring properties or the public highway.

AiryFairy1 · 27/06/2021 22:33

Bindweed. Knotweed has a creamy white tassel flower that’s currently blooming (bitter bitter first-hand experience experience 🤬)

campion · 27/06/2021 23:18

Gingernaut

Convolvulus or bindweed

Reading that, this Flanders and Swan song came into my head. Very witty.

campion · 27/06/2021 23:21

*Swann

Triggerslim · 27/06/2021 23:30

No thats definitely not Japanese Knotweed.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/06/2021 13:21

@Bluntness100

Russian vine maybe.?

So have I , and I think that is bindweed, Calystegia sp. Flower buds are wrong for Russian vine.

Those who think it's not bindweed, could you explain what is different about it that makes it not bindweed?
