Hello,
I had some excellent advice on here about roses (i ended up buying Desdemona lovely ). They are planted in full sun and I have English lavender dotted around too, what other plants can I add to give this a cottage garden feel? It's all in full sun and quite a big patch.
Thank you

We had some foxglove seeds from our neighbours. We planted them round the pond. I think they're quite cottagey.

Lupins, hollyhocks, sweetpeas and honeysuckle also have a cottage garden feel to me.

Brunnera is a fantastic flowerer in springtime (blue) and, if you cut it right back it can often fit a second flowering in. I also love Astrantia Roma (pale pink and not so agressive as Astrantia Major), some of the smaller Japanese anemones are gorgeous too - I like Prinz Heinrich (pink). Alliums are great and you can get them in a range of colours and sizes. Stachys macrantha is another favourite (purple). I'd better stop now..

Night scented stocks?

Funnyfive · 26/06/2021 18:04

Phlox, delphiniums, scabious, stocks, sweet Williams

Poppy’s and forget me not, and campanula bellflower in purple - but these all spread very easily though. Goldenrod and foxgloves for height, and bulbs like iris and allium work well.

Aquilegias, they self seed around.
I've only ever been able to grow foxgloves by starting with some plants and letting them self seed.

Don't forget springtime. Daffodils and primroses, pulmonaria, forget me nots...

Dahlia, scabious, verbena, echinacea look fab too

A cottage garden should have some herbs, I think. Chives and fennel are attractive, low growing thymes, pots of mint etc

Salvias, iris, cosmos, dianthus are all lovely. Smile

Quinque · 27/06/2021 09:03

Hardy geraniums for ground cover round your roses. Aquiligias are pretty, come in a range of colours and happily self seed. Salvias come in a range of colours and heights, are loved by bees and are long flowering. Lupins are lovely. Penstemons carry the foxglove shape through the summer. For height try verbena boniarensis, thalictrum or fennel. Sedums will bring you bees and butterflies and take you into Autumn.

Look at the recent “your most reliable plants” thread, as many of the things mentioned there would work well in a cottage garden.

Bookmarked as I wanted some ideas too! A couple of other things I like: hellebores and cerinthe.

We've got cottage borders, currently going crazy with poppies, oriental poppies, delphinium, foxgloves, hollyhocks, California poppies, penstemon, lavender, daisy type flowers (forgotten the name!) lupins, salvia, wild geranium, sweet Williams, sweet peas, geum, Canterbury bells, aquilegia and a few roses. So many bees! I'm always sad when it dies down but most of those reseed. Lots of forget me nots too earlier.
